Pay attention to rules and regulations

Potential business owners need to do their research in order to fully understand the tax and legal implications of starting a side-business.

These are some rules and regulations that you should be aware of:

You may need permission from your landlord, your mortgage provider, your local planning officer, or your local council if you are operating a home-based business.
You may be required to register with HM Revenue and Customs as a sole trader if you are selling goods or services regularly to make a profit, even handmade items.
HMRC may not require you to declare your annual trading income if it is less than £1,000 from one or more trades. However, there are situations when you will need to register for Self Assessment and report your income on your tax return.
If your annual income is more than £85,000 from a secondary source, you might need to register for VAT.

You should conduct a risk assessment following HACCP procedures if your activity involves handling food.

If you’re unsure of what to do, you should contact HMRC immediately.
