How to decide on a ‘right’ birthday present for a friend?

1. Remember past conversations
You may be able to guess what your friend is referring to in casual conversations, but you might not know the full extent of his wish list or explicit mentions. You can gift that item to your friend if it falls within your budget. You can also recall past conversations to get some clues.

2. Find out about his hobbies and interests

It is always a good idea to know your friend’s hobbies, interests and dislikes. You will have a clear idea of what presents you can buy for your friend. A gift that is related to your friend’s interests or hobbies could be a good idea. A gift of a cookbook with exotic recipes or new cooking techniques is an example of a thoughtful gift idea.

3. Be thoughtful

Don’t buy birthday gifts just because you can. If a person is given a gift that he truly values, like a product from his favorite brands, then your gift becomes meaningful and useful. It is the thoughtful gift that makes the receiver feel the most happy. It doesn’t always have to cost a lot.

4. Avoid common gift ideas

It’s easy to give boring gifts that lack personal touch to friends and family. The gift isn’t necessarily bad, but it isn’t memorable. Gifts like photo frames and money are too clichéd for birthdays.

5. Look at the season

Seasonal changes can lead to a higher demand for certain products. A gift that responds to seasonal needs can be a great idea.

6. Keep the age in your mind

To find the perfect gift for your friend, keep in mind their age. As we get older, our tastes, interests and needs change. Things you love in your 20s will no longer be as exciting if you are over 40. It’s important that you choose a gift that your friend will enjoy and not something you don’t like.

7. Be unique

You can gift something that will last a lifetime to your friend. Consider gifting your friend something that is a regular value, instead of buying a product. Give him a gift certificate/voucher at his favorite restaurant. Or buy him tickets to IMAX. You can think differently.

8. Finally, do not forget to budget

The most important thing is to be able to budget for the gift. Knowing how much money you can afford will help you narrow down the options to pick the perfect birthday gift. You don’t have to buy the most expensive gifts, but you do not need to choose the best.
