The Different Types of Gin

Gin spirit lovers can choose from a variety of different types. Each one is unique and can be combined into the most popular cocktails like the Negroni and Martini. What makes them different? Learn more below!
London Dry Gin

Although it originated in England, this gin is now available all over the globe. It is used in Gin and Tonics and in the Martini.

What makes it so special? London Dry Gin is known for its strong juniper flavor. You will also find fresh citrus notes in this Gin. A lemon twist brings out the citrus flavors of a Martini. Dry Gins are well-known for their lack of artificial sweeteners and flavors. It is a natural way to present gin.

Old Tom Gin

This type of gin was originally called “bathtub Gin” in 18th century because it was often made in residential homes. However, it wasn’t well-known for its quality for a long period. It was poor quality. In fact, sweeteners and licorice were used frequently to improve its taste. It’s not even close to its original counterpart.

What makes it special? Old Tom Gin is sweeter because it contains more licorice than standard gin. The sweetness will not be identical to the taste of licorice. It has a stronger flavor than London Dry Gin, which makes it ideal for mixing drinks (especially cocktails with bitter ingredients) and cocktails created before Prohibition Era.

Plymouth Gin

This gin is only available in Plymouth, England. Plymouth Gin is very different from London Dry Gin which can be made anywhere in the world. It is only available in this southern port city, which is located 190miles from London.

What makes it so special? It’s similar to London Dry Gin, but is drier and contains more earthy elements. It has more citrus flavors and is a little sweeter. The gin usually contains seven botanical ingredients: angelica root, dry orange peels dried, cardamom, coriander seed, dried orange peels and dried orange peels. Both roots impart earthier notes. The Negroni is well paired with Plymouth Gin.

Genever Gin is as original as gin can be. It was created in the 16th century. Gin is actually a malt wine spirit. This is where the majority of its flavor comes from. Five days of fermentation are required before the grains become a mash. This is similar to whiskey’s process for distillation. Distillers will then add different types of botanicals.

What makes it so special? Genever Gin does not have a dominant juniper taste. It is more malty than other types. Ginger, cloves and caraway are common ingredients. You won’t find the same citrus notes in London and Plymouth dry Gin. Many consider the end product to be more rich than Old Tom, and it is often considered to be the best for mixing drinks.

Navy Strength Gin

“Navy Strength” is essentially a London Dry Gin that’s too strong. This was once used in common rotation by Royal Navy. This powerful spirit packs a punch at 57% ABV. London dry Gin, on the other hand, can peak at 40 to 45 percent.

What makes it so special? It’s like London dry Gin on steroids. It is intense, and many distillers work hard to balance its flavors with high ABV. It’ll make you itch, and it will be just as dry as London dry.
