Some car repairs can be done by yourself. However, others are too complicated or require special tools that make it dangerous, time-consuming, and potentially dangerous. If this is the case, you should consult an expert mechanic. These are seven signs you may need to schedule a service.
Suspension and steering problems
A steering problem can be very dangerous because your car will not perform as you would expect in an emergency. It is important to seek out an experienced mechanic immediately you notice a problem.
There are several possible problems: Steering difficulty; steering wheel vibrations or feeling loose; steering wheel pulling to one side or another; car leaning towards one side during acceleration and braking; uneven or premature wear to your tyres.
Warning light for engine
Modern cars have a variety of sensors that monitor and measure hundreds of different systems. The engine warning light will flash on your dashboard if they find a result that is not within the pre-set parameters. If there is a problem, the light will flash. You don’t need to panic. Take your car to the garage to have it checked.
You might notice a light on your car reminding you that it is time for your next service. Although it is not a good idea to rush to make an appointment to have your mechanic run through the entire car service checklist, it is a good idea to review your service interval record or handbook to determine when your car should be seen.
Under the bonnet, smoke or steam
First, what color is the smoke?
Your car may be overheating if it produces white steam. To confirm, take a look at the temperature gauge in your car. If your gauge reads maximum, stop and let your car cool off before continuing your journey. Even though it is not important, make an appointment to see your mechanic.
Blue smoke is a sign that your car needs to be stopped immediately. Burning oil can cause blue smoke, which can severely damage your engine.
Leaks
Your car’s engine is designed to store and utilize the fluids you put in it – oil, fuel, coolant, etc. It’s important to have your car serviced immediately if there is a leak. This could not only save you money on repairs but also protect animals from poisoning by the leaked fluids.
If your car has been parked, you can see if it is leaking by moving it. Do you see any stains? These could be from coolant, oil, or brake fluid. Is there liquid underneath the exhaust pipe? Do not worry if water seeps near your front passenger seat in the summer. This is likely to be caused by your car’s cooling system.
Unusual noises
Nothing beats the sound of a revving engine as you drive from A to B. If your car makes strange or unusual noises, you should speak to a mechanic.
These are some sounds that you might hear and what they could mean.
Your suspension could be making a grinding or clunking sound under your vehicle.
If you hear a grinding or squealing sound when braking, check your brakes, especially your brake pads, brake rotors, and brake calipers.
You hear droning or dragging noises coming from your wheels. Check your wheel bearings.
Crunching gears is probably what you have in your gear box.
Loud exhaust sound – possible hole in your exhaust pipe
Whining under the bonnet, are your belts loose or tight?
Uneven engine noise could indicate that your engine is misfiring.
Metal-on-metal could mean one of many things. It is best to have it checked immediately.
Vibrations
Is your car vibrating when you drive? If so, it is possible that your tyres need to be replaced or that your wheel alignment needs to be adjusted.
Is your car shaking when you brake? You could have problems with your suspension, steering, or brakes. Your mechanic should inspect this for you.
Driving comfort is reduced
Low driving comfort can often be a sign that your suspension is not working properly. Your car might be riding low or rubbing on the wheel arch. You may also have difficulty driving over speed bumps. It’s a good idea to see an Oxford mechanic immediately if you notice any of the above signs.
